QR2: Everything you need to know

QR2 is an all-new quick release system for FANATEC® Steering Wheels and Wheel Bases. It is the first major change to the internal compatibility of the Fanatec ecosystem since the introduction of the ClubSport Wheel Base in 2011.

The mechanism is optimised for a secure and fast attachment/detachment of steering wheels, with the tapered shape naturally ensuring a tight fit. Originally used in the 2022 BMW M4 GT3, the QR2 has seen further improvements for use in sim racing and future motorsport applications.

Why should I upgrade to QR2?

QR2 is a major upgrade to the Fanatec ecosystem and improves on the QR1 in terms of strength, stability, ease of use, and precision fit. The use of retention bolts and locking nuts featured in our QR1 solutions has been eliminated.

Thanks to the new design and precise manufacturing processes, you should also find a reduction in mechanical noise while driving, and an improvement in force feedback detail. QR2-equipped wheels can be attached to a Fanatec Wheel Base without touching the spring-loaded sleeve mechanism, making it quicker and easier to start racing. The new design also makes the electronic connection for data and power more secure.

The Pro version is CNC-machined from a single block of billet aluminium. This motorsport-ready coupling meets FIA requirements, bringing real-world racing and sim racing closer together.

Fanatec ecosystem transition

The current quick release (QR1) used across the entire range of Fanatec Steering Wheels and Wheel Bases, which employs a round shaft and spring-loaded metal balls, is being phased out. All relevant Fanatec products, across all Series (e.g. CSL, ClubSport, Podium) will transition to the QR2 system. The transition period will last 1-2 years.

QR2 is an all-new mechanical design. The coupling has a squared and tapered shape that employs spring-loaded locking pins. The QR2 shape is therefore not compatible with QR1, although many QR1 products can be upgraded (see below).

Upgrade options

To use the QR2 system, both the Steering Wheel and the Wheel Base must be equipped with QR2 components: ‘Wheel-Side’ components for Steering Wheels, and ‘Base-Side’ components for Wheel Bases.

QR2 Pro Wheel-Side: motorsport-ready QR meeting FIA requirements.

Future Steering Wheels and Wheel Bases will come with QR2 by default, with the option to select an appropriate QR1 accessory (limited availability during the transition period).

Once Fanatec Wheel Bases ship with an exchangeable QR2 Base-Side by default, and your QR1 Steering Wheels are either not upgradable or you do not wish to upgrade each wheel, you will be able to replace the QR2 Base-Side with an optional QR1 Base-Side accessory (limited availability during the transition period). Once downgraded to QR1, the Wheel Base will support all compatible QR1 Steering Wheels.

If your Wheel Base uses a non-exchangeable QR1 connection, for example the CSL Elite Wheel Base + or ClubSport Wheel Base V2.5, Steering Wheels with QR2 can be downgraded by fitting a QR1 Wheel-Side (limited availability during the transition period).

Additional Notes

  • All QR2 Wheel-Side variants are compatible with all QR2 Base-Side variants.
  • There are different variations of the QR2 Base-Side:
    • QR2 Base-Side (Type-M) for Podium Wheel Bases
    • QR2 Base-Side (Type-C) for Gran Turismo DD Pro and CSL DD Wheel Bases
    • QR2 Base-Side (Type-F) for ClubSport DD Wheel Bases
  • The QR2 Lite Wheel-Side replaces the current QR1 Lite Wheel-Side used on CSL Series products and is therefore not compatible with all Steering Wheels with an exchangeable quick release due to the torque detection pin (see list below).
  • The QR2 Lite Wheel-Side does not support High Torque Mode on the Podium DDs and has limited support for High Torque Mode on ClubSport DDs (the Steering Wheel for Gran Turismo DD Extreme is the exception). If your Podium Wheel Base is fitted with a QR2 Base-Side, a wheel with a metal QR2 Wheel-Side is required to activate High Torque Mode.
  • Upgrading compatible Steering Wheels and Wheel Bases to QR2 is a straightforward process that can be performed by the end user. Please refer to the Quick Guides and Video Guides provided in the Downloads section of each product page.
  • When upgrading from QR1 to QR2, the distance between the Wheel Base and Steering Wheel may change slightly.
  • Current Fanatec Wheel Bases preassembled with the QR1 can be upgraded to QR2.
  • Fanatec Wheel Bases preassembled with the QR2 and can be downgraded to QR1 with optional accessories (limited availability during transition period).
  • Fanatec Steering Wheels will generally continue to ship with the selected QR in a separate package, requiring user assembly.
  • QR1 Base-Sides (Type-C, Type-M, and Type-F) and the QR1 Wheel-Side will have limited availability during the transition period.
