Can QR2 Be Used with All Current Fanatec Steering Wheels?

Last updated:

Fanatec has introduced a significant upgrade with their QR2 quick release system, designed to provide improvements in strength, stability, ease of use, and precision for sim racing enthusiasts. But as with any new technology, one of the burning questions on many racers’ minds is: does the QR2 upgrade work with all current Fanatec wheels?

Do you need to upgrade to QR2?

If you're purchasing a new Fanatec product, you don’t need to worry—all current Fanatec steering wheels and wheel bases now come with QR2 preinstalled. However, if you own older hardware that uses the original quick release system, also referred to as QR1, you’ll need to upgrade both your steering wheel and wheel base to QR2 for full compatibility.

Is your Fanatec wheel compatible with QR2?

The good news is that all Fanatec steering wheels with an exchangeable quick release can be upgraded to QR2. If your wheel features a removable QR1, you can install a QR2 Wheel-Side adapter. However, the type of QR2 adapter you need depends on your wheel model:

  • QR2 Pro Wheel-Side: Premium CNC-machined aluminum, designed for motorsport-level performance.
  • QR2 Wheel-Side: High-quality diecast aluminum for standard Fanatec steering wheels.

If your steering wheel does not have an exchangeable quick release, it cannot be upgraded to QR2. Check your wheel’s product page to confirm if it supports a QR swap.

Upgrading your wheel base to QR2

Upgrading your wheel is only half the process—your wheel base must also be equipped with a QR2 Base-Side adapter to ensure full compatibility. Here’s how to determine which one you need:

  • Podium Wheel Bases – Require QR2 Base-Side (Type-M)
  • CSL and GT Wheel Bases – Require QR2 Base-Side (Type-C)

If your wheel base has a fixed QR1, it cannot be upgraded to QR2. However, if it has an exchangeable quick release, you can install the corresponding QR2 Base-Side adapter.

How to upgrade to QR2 – Step by step

  1. Check your hardware – Verify that both your steering wheel and wheel base have exchangeable quick releases.
  2. Choose the right QR2 components – Select the correct Wheel-Side and Base-Side QR2 versions based on your hardware.
  3. Install the QR2 adapters – Follow Fanatec’s official installation guides to swap out QR1 components for QR2.
  4. Ensure full compatibility – A wheel with QR2 will not work with a wheel base using QR1, and vice versa. Both must match.
  5. Test your setup – Once installed, check for proper locking, alignment, and force feedback response.

If you're using the latest Fanatec hardware, your products already come with QR2, meaning no upgrade is required. However, if you own older equipment and want to switch to QR2, upgrading is straightforward as long as your devices have exchangeable quick releases.
