Guide to Fanatec’s GT DD Pro Wheel Base

Last updated:

Fanatec’s Gran Turismo® DD Pro Wheel Base is a popular racing simulator hardware component known for its precision, reliability, and versatility. It’s designed to provide an immersive experience for virtual racers by offering realistic force feedback and excellent control. One of the key factors that distinguish different GT DD models is their force output, measured in Newton meters (Nm). Two common models include the 5 Nm and 8 Nm versions, each suited for different types of sim racing enthusiasts.

Difference between 5 Nm and 8 Nm

The primary difference between the Gran Turismo® DD Pro (5 Nm) and Gran Turismo® DD Pro Wheel Base (8 Nm) versions of the GT DD wheel base lies in the force feedback strength, which impacts the overall driving experience. The "Nm" rating refers to the amount of torque (rotational force) the motor can generate, influencing the intensity of the forces that simulate the track feel and car dynamics.

  1. 5 Nm version:
    • The 5 Nm wheel base is more suited for casual sim racers or individuals new to the hobby. It offers sufficient force feedback to simulate a variety of vehicles and riving conditions but at a lower intensity. It is ideal for those who want to experience racing without the need for ultra-high precision or extreme forces.
    • This version is also more accessible in terms of price, making it a great choice for individuals who are starting out or for those who race on smaller or less demanding tracks.
  1. 8 Nm version:
    • The 8 Nm version is designed for more experienced or competitive sim racers who desire stronger, more realistic feedback. With a higher torque output, it allows for a more immersive experience with increased detail in the feel of the car, road, and track surfaces.
    • This higher force feedback can simulate more nuanced effects such as tire slip, track bumps, and the forces felt through the steering wheel during high-speed turns. It is especially beneficial for racing enthusiasts using high-end racing rigs or for those who compete in virtual racing leagues.

Compatibility

Compatibility with different platforms can be achieved through the Fanatec ecosystem. Both the 5 Nm and 8 Nm versions of the GT DD Wheel Base are compatible with PC and PlayStation, and can be used with Xbox, provided you use an Xbox-licensed steering wheel.

Setup

Assembly:

  • Begin by securely mounting the wheel base to your racing setup. If you’re using a table mount, the ClubSport DD Table Clamp can prevent any wobbling or instability during use.
  • Attach the steering wheel to the wheel base via the quick release. Make sure the wheel is properly locked in place.

Updates:

  • Download any necessary drivers and software (Windows PC required) from the Fanatec website or via the Fanatec App. Install the software and follow the instructions provided.
  • Launch the software and configure your wheel base for your desired racing games or simulator software.

Calibration:

  • Calibration is crucial for optimal performance. Follow the on-screen instructions in the setup software to calibrate the wheel base. Calibrate the wheel base using the Fanatec Control Panel (or the Fanatec App) to set the steering angle and ensure proper alignment with the steering wheel.
  • Test different force feedback settings to find the perfect balance for your driving and racing style you prefer.
