Is 8 Nm torque on a wheelbase enough?

The question of whether 8 Nm is enough is something we encounter frequently. Ultimately, the answer varies based on personal preference, the type of steering wheel being used, and the individual's prior experience with sim racing equipment.

With wheelbases like the Fanatec CSL DD and GT DD Pro, which achieve 8 Nm of torque when equipped with the Boost Kit 180, sim racers have access to a level of force feedback that satisfies both casual racers and seasoned enthusiasts. While these wheelbases offer incredible detail and immersion, it’s important to note that 8 Nm is generally more than sufficient for most racing scenarios.

Interestingly, some users who use the 8 Nm wheelbase actually lower the force feedback settings to approximately 6–7 Nm. This demonstrates that the ideal force feedback strength can differ significantly for each user. Even with these reduced settings, the detail and precision offered by direct drive technology remain unmatched.

The force feedback perception is also influenced by the diameter of the steering wheel. Smaller and lighter steering wheels tend to make the force feedback feel stronger, whereas larger, heavier wheels can slightly temper the sensation. This interplay between torque output and wheel design highlights the flexibility of systems like the CSL DD and GT DD Pro, as they perform admirably across a variety of setups and preferences.

From belt-driven to direct drive

The most significant contrast in force feedback perception is often noticed by those who previously used a belt-driven setup and are now upgrading to direct drive technology.

This direct connection results in a more immersive racing experience, where every subtle change in road surface, tyre grip, or vehicle dynamics can be felt with remarkable clarity. The upgrade to direct drive technology, especially with an 8 Nm wheelbase, is often described as transformative by sim racers who value precise and responsive feedback.

Then, is 8 Nm enough?

For most sim racers, 8 Nm is more than enough torque to provide a realistic and engaging simulation experience. It balances powerful feedback with manageability, allowing racers to enjoy extended sessions without fatigue. For beginners or casual racers, the 5 Nm base performance of the CSL DD and GT DD Pro might suffice, but for those seeking a deeper and more immersive connection to the track, upgrading to 8 Nm is highly recommended.
