The difference between 5 Nm and 8 Nm wheel bases

The CSL DD Wheel Base can be purchased with 5 Nm or (upgraded to) 8 Nm. Nm stands for Newton-meters, which is a unit of torque. Torque is essentially the rotational force your steering wheel delivers through the force feedback system. The difference between these models primarily lies in the maximum torque output, which impacts the intensity and realism of the force feedback.

5 Nm version:

The 5 Nm CSL DD Wheel Base is a great entry-level wheel base for sim racers who are just starting out or for casual players who want a good balance of performance and affordability. At 5 Nm of torque, this wheel base provides realistic force feedback, but it’s less intense compared to higher-end systems.

It’s also ideal for sim racers with smaller or less rigid setups, as the 5 Nm version won’t exert excessive forces that could impact performance or comfort.

8 Nm version:

The 8 Nm CSL DD offers significantly more torque, making it a better option for more experienced or competitive sim racers who require stronger force feedback.

With 8 Nm, the wheel base is able to deliver more detailed feedback, such as better simulation of tire slip, bumps, and varying track conditions. This delivers a more intense experience that can help improve lap times and give a more authentic driving feel.

The 8 Nm version is especially beneficial for users with sturdy racing rigs who want to push the limits of their equipment and improve their competitive edge.

Compatibility

The CSL DD wheel base, whether in the 5 Nm or 8 Nm configuration, are fully compatible with PC racing simulations, including popular titles like iRacing, Assetto Corsa, rFactor 2, and more.

CSL DD Wheel Bases are not compatible with PlayStation, but can be used with Xbox, provided you’re using an Xbox-licensed steering wheel.

Setup

Assembly:

  • Begin by securely mounting the CSL DD Wheel Base to your racing rig or desk. Fanatec offers a range of mounts, including the CSL DD Table Clamp, to ensure a stable and sturdy setup.
  • Attach the racing wheel to the wheel base using the Quick Release system. This system ensures that the wheel is easily removable but stays securely in place during use.

Updates:

  • Download and install the latest drivers and/or software directly from the Fanatec website or via the Fanatec App (Windows PC required). This includes the Fanatec Control Panel, which allows you to customize your settings and update firmware.
  • Once the software is installed, connect the CSL DD to your PC and run the setup tool to ensure that the wheel base is recognized and ready to go.

Calibration:

  • Proper calibration is key to achieving the best performance from your CSL DD. Use the Fanatec Control Panel (also possible via the Fanatec App) to calibrate the wheel base to set the steering angle and ensure it is aligned correctly with the steering wheel.
  • Additionally, set the force feedback strength according to your preferences. Adjust parameters such as FFB strength, damping, and dead zones to find the ideal balance between realism and comfort.
